We were recently surprised to see a generous donation from Lotto Social on our Just Giving page, and since then we have found out more about them and they have found out more about us! We are pleased that they have chosen to focus their latest story on Bristol After Stroke in particular:

"Launched in 2007, Lotto Social is a popular online lottery service that brings together members into a lottery syndicate. The service aims to simplify the process of playing in syndicates, making the lottery experience socially engaging and allowing members to maximise chances of winning.

As part of the service, Lotto Social donates thousands of pounds to charity. Members are given the opportunity, through a monthly open panel, to select which charity they would like Lotto Social’s donation to be directed to that specific month. The two most prominent charities are then pitched against each other and members vote for how the donation should be allocated. Each pledge shifts the percentage of how the £1,000 is to be split between the charities. Lotto Social has been donating for the last 17 months to charitable causes through online donation platform, JustGiving.

Bristol After Stroke received a 67% share of Lotto Social’s May donation. Aquarius received 33% of the donation share. Established in 1977, Aquarius strives to help people overcome the harms caused by alcohol, drugs and gambling by providing a free confidential service and one on one support. The association works closely with individuals, families and friends to lessen the impact caused by the behaviour of a loved one.

For the last 35 years the Bristol After Stroke has been helping local people get their life back on track following a stroke, filling an important gap in local care services. However, a lack of funding means they are currently only helping one in five people living in the Bristol and South Gloucestershire area who could benefit from their services. Every year we at Bristol After Stroke work hard to generate sufficient funds. The charity relies on the various activities of fundraisers and donations, such as Lotto Social, to help it reach its fundraising targets."

Rebecca Sheehy, Chief Executive at Bristol After Stroke, said “We know the work that we do makes a massive difference to people’s lives. We’re there when a person comes out of hospital to advise, encourage and support them as they fight their way back towards living a fulfilling life. And because we rely on so many volunteers – many of whom have themselves survived a stroke – every pound we raise goes a very long way.”
