Sport and stroke are not two words many people would necessarily group together.

Unless, of course, you happen to be part of the Bristol After Stroke Community!

Over the last couple of years our walking netball and football groups have proved hugely successful ways to improve people’s mobility, mental wellbeing and social confidence… trailblazing the way in which stroke-affected people can participate in sport.

In May, we took a giant leap forward by holding our very first Sports Day… a chance for stroke-affected people with all levels of mobility to try their hands (and feet!) at a range of activities, including quoits, Connect 4, walking football and netball (of course!) plus – to everyone’s amazement – walking rugby.

Bristol Bears Foundation Community Officer Kirsty Horner ran a scintillating session of tag rugby that was thoroughly enjoyed by all – including wheelchair users.

Everyone on the day had a chance to sample all of the sports on offer at a level that was safe as well as stimulating for them.

We are so grateful to everyone who made the day possible, including our very own Praveen Kumar, who got proceedings off to a great start with a warm up session.

Rest assured: by popular demand Bristol After Stroke Sports Day will be making a return in future years!
