Widening inequalities in stroke identified in 30-year research
The prevalence of stroke risk factors such as high blood pressure and diabetes are higher and increasing faster among black African and Caribbean groups, compared to people from white backgrounds. People from black African backgrounds are also around twice as likely to experience stroke without a prior risk factor diagnosis, compared to people from white backgrounds.

The real cause of a common stroke may have been missed for decades
Scientists have discovered that a common type of stroke may have a very different cause than doctors once thought. Instead of fatty plaque clogging arteries, the strongest link was found with enlarged and damaged blood vessels deep within the brain. Insomnia and Sleep Disturbance in Stroke Survivors
Post-stroke sleep disturbance/insomnia is a prevalent but under-recognized complication that impairs recovery and the quality of life in stroke survivors. This meta-analysis aims to determine the prevalence of sleep disturbance/insomnia after stroke, compare sleep disturbance/insomnia rates between ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke patients, evaluate demographic and regional influences, and assess the impact of comorbidities such as anxiety, depression, and cardiovascular conditions on post-stroke sleep disturbance/insomnia.
Extreme heat and humidity may be raising stroke risk globally
To understand the magnitude of the link between heat and stroke, his team analyzed nearly 5.9 million stroke deaths from 522 cities across 25 countries. Both extreme heat and cold increased the risk of dying from ischemic stroke, which is caused by blocked blood flow to the brain, and hemorrhagic stroke, caused by bleeding in the brain.1 Although cold accounted for a larger share of excess deaths, heat was also linked to additional deaths.

Doctors explain why strokes are more common in the morning
According to Dr. Gregory Albers, the blood is "stickier" in the morning hours, which makes it more likely to clot. "And our intrinsic mechanisms that dissolve clots in the body are less effective in the early morning hours.
"The other thing that happens is that there's a rise in blood pressure," he continued. "When you're asleep, in the middle of the night, your blood pressure drops, and then as you are waking up, there's a rise in blood pressure. Those are the main mechanisms that people think account for the early morning increase in stroke."

Reimagining pain assessment after stroke
Post-stroke shoulder pain is a common disabling complication that can interfere with a person’s participation in rehabilitation. It can also delay motor recovery, disrupt sleep and reduce quality of life.
“Pain can create a significant barrier to rehabilitation after stroke,” Veras said. “Our goal is to better understand how the brain responds to pain during movements that are relevant to rehabilitation and, ultimately, to support more individualized approaches to assessment and treatment.”

When minutes matter, AI is helping diagnose stroke patients
Every minute, about two million neurons die in your brain after a stroke. According to a recent American Medical Association survey, 80% of physicians are using AI to summarize medical research and the standard of care. It's become especially helpful in diagnosing stroke patients more quickly. Shastri says what used to take upwards of 45 minutes now takes just a few. Not to mention everyone on the team is alerted, cutting down on communication time as well.
A Shot at Healing the Brain
Every year, millions of people suffer strokes caused by blood clots. Treatments including clot-dissolving drugs and the actual removal of the clot can restore blood flow and preserve threatened brain tissue but cannot replace damaged tissue.
Duke researchers have long been developing an injectable material designed to make the part of the brain directly damaged by stroke more suitable for self-repair. In its newest form, early results from attempts to recruit the body’s immune system to help in these repairs show promise, although the treatment has only been tested in mice so far.
