Our Avonmouth group, now firmly-established in its new home at Avonmouth Community Centre, is a wonderful, warm supportive space for stroke-affected people… and it’s proving hugely popular.
Each week, a wide array of activities is organised by the BAS team and our amazing volunteers - from Zumba, “New Age Kurling” (no ice required!) and quoits through to activities to get the brain ticking - like quizzes and bingo.
But, most of all, it’s somewhere that stroke-affected people can meet up, share their experiences and support each other.
And our volunteers play a key role in that. Some have themselves had strokes in the past… like Collete: “It’s such a welcoming place,” she says, “somewhere you can chat with other stroke survivors who totally understand how you feel and share tips and hints.
“Going along as a volunteer is just so fulfilling.”
Nicky has been involved supporting us as a volunteer for “six or seven years”, she says. “I had retired and was looking for something to do: two of my friends were volunteering and persuaded me to come along too. I loved it and I’m still here!
“There’s even more to do at the new location. I’m very interested in arts and crafts and we’re working on creating poppies made out of lemonade bottle bottoms for a display at Shirehampton!
“It’s a lovely group… such nice people and full of laughter.”
Adds Lucy Stockall, our Stroke Volunteer Co-ordinator, “If you have time to come along for a few hours on Thursday afternoons, we’d love to hear from you. Through volunteering, you can give back to the stroke community and support people along their stroke journey in a friendly and positive environment.
“Most of all, it’s a hugely rewarding and enjoyable experience!”
