Could you give stroke-affected people the “benefit” of your advice?

Having a stroke can be a life-changing event for many people, and one of the biggest impacts can be upon their financial situation.

Navigating the benefits system in the aftermath of a stroke can be bewildering and frustrating – especially for those who have aphasia, and whose reading, writing and speech can be affected.

Bristol After Stroke is now looking for volunteers to help with a new role we have developed in partnership with North Bristol Advice Centre – and who could play a big part in helping stroke-affected people.

Individuals who are interested will need to be organised, with an eye for detail and a good listening ear to support people who have had strokes to fill in their DWP forms. Full training will be given to help you understand how the social and welfare systems work, and how you can help people to access this valuable support.

A Benefits Form Filling Volunteer will spend around three hours a week supporting Bristol After Stroke clients to complete benefit forms such as PIP (Personal Independent Payment) and Attendance Allowance – as well as other forms where necessary. Volunteers receive full training and, by offering guidance, support and compassion, can ensure that no Bristol After Stroke client has to face their financial challenges alone.

Becoming a Benefits Form Filling Volunteer is an incredibly rewarding experience. Not only do you get the chance to positively impact the lives of individuals, but you also gain valuable skills and knowledge related to the benefits systems and social support.

Whether you have an interest in this area or are looking for experience to progress your career, we would love to hear from you. For more information, please click on the link, contact Lucy Stockall on 0117 9647657 or email: [email protected]
